MMS 8th Graders Assigned Gender Fluidity Book

Advanced English 8th graders at Middlesex were recently assigned the book The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater as part of their non-fiction curriculum unit. This text includes pro-transgender themes including transitioning and the graphic desires to inflict self-harm due to gender dysphoria. Additionally, it contains detailed definitions around "gender, sex, sexuality, romance" terms as well as discussion on the complex topics of abortion and racism.

While students were given the option to choose from several different books before being assigned one of them, the description for the 57 Bus (shown below) makes no mention of any of these controversial topics which may be viewed as inappropriate for 13 year olds.
